AUBURN, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, has the advantage of being above the valley fog and below the Sierra snow line. At the crossroads of I-80 and Highway 49, Auburn is the county seat of Placer County and an important retail trade center. Nearby are recreational areas: Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympic games, 85 miles from Auburn, and many other ski areas, hiking trails, Lake Clementine, Rollins Lake and Folsom Lake for boating and fishing.
This large building of terra cotta brick and concrete is an adaptation of the Beaux Arts Classicism style popular the 1900-1920 decades. Designed by William Henry Weeks, this building began life in 1915 as The Auburn Grammar School and is a State point of Historical Interest. The building's decorative treatment is fired clay sculpted and manufactured at the Gladding McBean Clay Works in Lincoln, California.
